The gist of the story is that you get stuck in a town where a strange plague has broken out, is being controlled by mysterious theocrats and their violent acolytes, and the powers that be are also involved. Think of it like the Doom campaign maps, but each of them supersized, and all connected so you can go back and forth between them like a singular world, and only quick momentary loading between them akin to Half-Life. Strife is FPS with some RPG elements, with huge interconnected maps that are a marvel for the time. In fact, if you've played both games you might agree that they both have different 'DNA' and are a different experience. This, in my opinion, was a progression of note for such games. Although System Shock released 2 years prior, Strife was less complex, had simplified gameplay and superior controls. Strife is probably the most advanced game on the Doom engine, and can be considered a forgotten precursor to so many games that came much much later. Needless to say, Strife was easily overshadowed. The year actually began with Duke Nukem 3D, and later also featured releases such as C&C Red Alert, Crash Bandicoot, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, to name a few.
